DIY Soap Nut Laundry Detergent

As you probably saw in an earlier post that I did for NaturOli, I have soap nuts! I have been using soap nuts/berries now for about 2 years. When I first started using them, I never thought that these little things were going to get my clothes clean, but after a few washes, they proved me wrong. I absolutely love them. Plus, You can’t get anymore natural and organic than a nut from a tree.

The convenience of using the soap nuts is great. You take 5 or 6 and toss them into a muslin bag and into your wash. They can even be reused a handful of times. Hardest part about using them is remembering to find them after the wash so they don’t find their way into the dryer!

As easy as they are to use, lately I’ve been using them to make a concentrated liquid to wash my clothes instead. So simple to do once again and this helps anyone that doesn’t like using just the nuts.

I decided to share the recipe on how you can make your own soap nut liquid at home!

Here is what you will need:

-6 Soap nuts

-2 Cups of Water

-Rosemary Essential Oil

That’s it!!

Step 1. Grab 6 Soap Nuts…  I used NaturOli

Step 5. Simmer on low for 30 mins.

Step 6. Let cool and strain into a jar. Squeeze excess soap out of the soap nuts.

Step 7. Add 10 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil. Rosemary is a natural preservative and aids in cleaning. Plus, it has a nice scent!

Step 8. Store in an airtight container. If you add the rosemary, shelf life will be close to 10 days. If you do not add the rosemary, your shelf life will be much shorter!

And there you have it! Add a tablespoon per load and this will be a great way how to extend the life of your soap nuts.

Don’t forget once your soap nuts are spent, you can grind them up and add them to your soil for plants. It has great nourishing properties to help give your plants and soil some life!

What ifyou stored this in the fridge? Any idea who long it would last then? Do you notice a difference between using just the nuts and the concentrate? I’ve never used them but want to try thanks for the post!

I havent seen a difference from using the concentrate and just the nuts as far as washing abilities. However the water gets a little more soapy when its in concentrate because its not having to be pulled from the nuts. But either way clothes are still clean! Interesting thought about the fridge! I would think so, because most anything goes bad at a slower pace when cooler.. Worth a shot!
